REPUBLICANS EXECUTE SEN. CRAIG BUT PARDON SEN. VITTER

I think it is unfair that Republican senators as well as the Republican National Committee are screaming for the head of Sen. Larry Craig because of the men's bathroom incident in Minneapolis airport.

Shailagh Murray and Paul Kane write in today's The Washington Post:

"Fellow Republicans swiftly condemned him, fearful of the political fallout and mortified by the tabloid-style drama. Several GOP senators, including presidential candidate John McCain (Ariz.), called for Craig to step down.

"On Thursday, officials at the Republican National Committee drafted a statement demanding Craig's resignation, GOP sources said, but it was not issued because senior members of the Idaho Republican Party feared that it would complicate efforts to persuade Craig to resign."

I say "unfair," because there has been no similar call for the resignation of Sen. David Vitter (R - La.) for the discovery of his name and telephone number on the D.C. Madam's list. If Republicans demand that Craig goes, why is there no call for Vitter to resign?

Is it that Craig's sin was approaching strangers in a men's bathroom, a location that could not be more seedy and low-class, whereas Vitter utilized female prostitutes in a more discreet and private way?

Or is it because Craig was seeking male-on-male sex, but Vitter was looking for heterosexual adventure?

In demanding the resignation of Craig, Republicans are invoking a dicey double standard that can only show up their prejudices and secret homoerotic fears.
