REPUBLICANS FROTH AT U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISION UPHOLDING OBAMACARE

How about all those mean Republicans and Libertarians denouncing Obamacare and saying how they will do anything to overturn it, in spite of today's decision at the U.S. Supreme Court upholding it as constitutional?

David Frum, writing in The Daily Beast, says repeal is a fantasy.

" . . . today's Supreme Court decision will make it a lot harder to elect Mitt Romney. President Obama has just been handed a fearsome election weapon. 2012 is no longer exclusively a referendum on the president's economic management. 2012 is now also a referendum on Mitt Romney's healthcare plans. The president can now plausibly say that a vote for the Republicans is a vote to raise prescription drug costs on senior citizens and to empower insurance companies to deny coverage to children for pre-existing conditions. Those charges will hurt—and maybe hurt enough to sway the election."

CHEERS FOR OBAMA'S PICK OF SONIA SOTOMAYOR FOR U.S. SUPREME COURT

Hurray for Pres. Barack Obama's nomination for U.S. Supreme Court of Sonia Sotomayor. Sotomayor is a Court of Appeals judge on the Second Circuit. She is Puerto Rican and speaks fluent Spanish.

Michael Shear, Debbi Wilgoren and Robert Barnes report for the WashPo web page:

"If confirmed, Sotomayor, 54, would be the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice and only the third woman ever to sit on the panel. She grew up in a Bronx housing project, went on to Princeton University and Yale Law School, and has stirred controversy by saying that judges' legal findings are informed by their own life experiences as well as their legal research."

DEMOCRATS REJOICE - GUN ISSUE NEUTRALIZED BY TODAY'S DECISION

The decision today by Justice Scalia striking down the gun laws in the District of Colombia (District of Colombia v. Heller) should not be taken too sourly by Democrats. Even though the Scalia argument is somewhat shallow and specious, the overall Scalia result prevents the right from being able to claim that a liberal Supreme Court is the issue. Let Wayne La Pierre and the other gun nuts salivate over this "victory." Their argument about being persecuted for their constitutional "rights" has just be neutralized for the 2008 elections.

ISRAEL SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS COLLECTIVE PUNISHMENT, A DECISION DESTINED TO STAIN ISRAEL JUDICIARY

The Israel Supreme Court has ruled that cutting off fuel and food supplies to the Palestinians in Gaza is perfectly legal. This is as notorious a ruling as that of the U.S. Supreme Court in Korematsu more than 60 years ago when the Court ruled that locking up Japanese Americans was perfectly okay and within the power of the president. We all know that Korematsu has been a stain on the U.S. justice system, and we also know that the Israeli court has now made a huge blunder, seeming to countenance and approve despicable collective punishment for the rocket attacks of a few.
